The ‘gimmick’ to the book, as it were, is that Cook writes from the perspective of the bad guy. The Black Company is about, well, The Black Company, a band of cutthroat mercenaries in a generic fantasy land. I’d heard mention of the Black Company series in passing a couple of times, however– and when Tor.com gave the first one away in ebook form (to promote the newest release, natch), I figured I’d give it a go. I’ve read Cook before– namely, a couple of his Garrett: PI books (detective noir in fantasyland, pretty much), way back before I started this blog. Instead, I’m gonna hammer out a couple of reviews of the books I read during the trip! So, uh, that’s good, right?Īnd to start, we have Glen Cook’s The Black Company. But don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you with vacation pictures (that’s what facebook is for). Not that you probably noticed, but I’ve been incommunicado for the last week and a half– that’s because I’ve been on vacation! Went traipsing around Colorado for a bit, which was super fun. It’s a way of looking at trauma that doesn’t erase it, ignore it, or try to “conquer” it. Lynch’s later works have been informed by his passion for transcendental meditation, specifically how we deal with trauma, and that’s sort of what led Surrender to its final form. I was basically rewriting from scratch, and the story (about a queer teen who leads his friends to take down a conversion camp) was there-and slick-but there was an emotional core missing. I’ve been a fan of David Lynch forever, and specifically his revival of Twin Peaks informed the work I was doing on Surrender Your Sons. What was your biggest inspiration, or rather, what motivated and drove you to write Surrender your Sons? My husband and I moved from California to North Carolina to be closer to family, so seeing my nieces has been big stress reliever from the pressure of…the entire world. Thanks for asking! Quarantining has been a challenge, as it’s been for everyone else. It is a gay thriller set in a conversion camp (which I was lucky enough to read an e-arc of), releasing 15th September, 2020, and it is an amazing book! Read on for some fun questions, book recommendations and tid-bits about SYS.īefore we begin, would you like to tell us a little about how have you been? What has quarantining been like, and are things good on your side of the world? Hey there book lovers! Today I have an amazing and interesting interview with Adam Sass, author of upcoming debut Surrender your Sons. In that essay, Moorehead, who had been sceptical about the “whole elaborate Anzac legend’’, described his conversion. As Australia marks the Gallipoli Centenary in 2015, it is worth recalling Moorehead re-awakened interest in the Gallipoli story with publication of his book, Gallipoli (1956), and before that his account in New Yorker magazine of a visit to the Dardanelles that appeared in its April, 1955 edition. He melded the role of reporter, war correspondent, eyewitness to history and literary historian in a remarkable career cut short by a stroke in 1966 that robbed him of his ability to communicate.īut before that happened Melbourne-born and educated Moorehead had created a body of work that ensured his reputation as an Australian author of the front rank, and someone of unusual cultural significance. Alan McCrae Moorehead was the outstanding Australian writer-journalist of his generation. So, the last time it came up in an interview, one of my friends, Jan Eldredge, the author of Evangeline of the Bayou, which is a great book by the way, so go pick it up, but anyway, she reached out to me and said that she happened to be friends with Ike Eisenmann, who played Tony in that movie. Usually, when I conduct one, I ask people what their favorite childhood movie was, and I think the answer I’ve received most frequently is Escape to Witch Mountain, which was among my childhood faves as well. I have to start by saying that this is quite possibly the most excited I’ve ever been for one of my interviews.
It is a portrait of what remains when dreams of utopia have withered away. Told by a chorus of narrators-including gossips, gangsters, a ghost, and a serial killer-who flirt, lie, argue, and finish one another’s stories, Marcial Gala's The Black Cathedral is a darkly comic indictment of modern Cuba, gritty and realistic but laced with magic. THE BLACK CATHEDRAL By Marcial Gala A virtuous structure, according to John Ruskin, must act well, and do the things it was intended to do in the best way. This generation will carry these traits beyond the borders of the neighborhood, the city, and the country, unable to escape the shadow of the unfinished cathedral. In a neighborhood that roils with passions and conflicts, at the foot of a cathedral that rises higher day by day, there grows a generation marked by violence, cruelty, and extreme selfishness. Arturo Stuart, a charismatic, visionary preacher, discovers soon after arriving that God has given him a mission: to build a temple that surpasses any before seen in Cuba, and to make of Cienfuegos a new Jerusalem. Gala also won the 2018 Prize of the City of Buenos Aires-Clarn for Call Me Cassandra. The Black Cathedral received the Critics' Award and the Alejo Carpentier Award in 2012 and was published in English by FSG in 2020. He won the Pinos Nuevos Prize for best short story in 1999. Haunting and transcendently twisted, this English-language debut from a Cuban literary star is a tale of race, magic, belief, and fateThe Stuart family moves to a marginal neighborhood of Cienfuegos, a city on the southern coast of Cuba. Marcial Gala is a novelist, a poet, and an architect from Cuba. When you choose Norcross Inn and Suites, you get an affordable night's stay without big-city rates that can break the bank. Still, after a midnight tryst, Lockwood can’t get Nellie out of his mind or life. Headstrong and not willing to put up a façade for the sake of society’s conventions. Nellie is everything not suitable to the role of a duchess. She fears being left behind and discarded, but that’s still not enough to give up her freedom… even for a man she can’t get out of her mind.Īndrew Lockwood, our lovely duke, is just looking to save his family’s estate from ruin, and he needs a rich wife to do it. But the carefree life can also be a lonely one as she watches all her other friends get married and partner off with men who love and adore them. She’ll sample the wares and discard them when they no longer suit her, which is exactly why she’s amazing. Nope, she’s got big plans to do things her way, and turning her freedom over to a man isn’t one of them. Headstrong Nellie Young isn’t going to marry. Shupe delivers and once again provides a fresh historical romp blending reality with fantasy. Throughout the entire Fifth Avenue Rebels series I wanted the continuously jilted Duke of Lockwood to get his redemption story and a chance to fall in love. The series ends just how I wanted it to… with a bang. Perhaps, of greatest importance is Part III of the book because it allows feeling the significance of changes which the United Kingdom was going through back then. Instead, Hobbes chose to deal with them in a way that makes the readers feel themselves a part of this history. The book does not directly describe these events, nor does it contain any concealed descriptions. All these parts have been written with regards to the events which were taking place in the United Kingdom in the 16th-17th centuries, the times when it experienced numerous changes in government and religious convictions. The book consists of four main parts, namely Part I: Of Man, Part II: Of Commonwealth, Part II: of a Christian Commonwealth, and Part IV: Of the Kingdom of Darkness. People’s ideas regarding politics, religion, society, and the like matters always differ this is why there is no wonder that Hobbes’s book caused so many controversial opinions. Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes in 1651 and since then the debates over this book have been taking place. He puts in a full day at the keyboard, and says that the first draft of one of his books usually takes him about three or four week to complete. It is all quite a change for the former cable TV company worker who quit to pursue writing fulltime writer three years ago.ĭarren does all his writing on a very basic PC in the corner of his bedroom in his parent's house in the village of Palliskenry, about 12 miles from Limerick city. ``While I was writing the first the idea of the series grew and now most of the stories exist in draft form, their plots mapped out and ready to be polished into final form over the next decade or so.'' Lucrative publishing contracts with Harper Collins in Britain and Ireland and Little Brown in the US have made him the latest member of the exclusive club of Irish millionaire popular novelists.Ĭirque du Freak has also excited the interest of one of Hollywood's major film studios, and last week after months of negotiation, Warner Brothers signed a seven-figure deal for the film rights. Harry Potter's creator JK Rowling certainly thinks he's onto a winner, describing Cirque du Freak as a compelling book with a plot so full of twists that it leaves the reader hungry for more.īut these two children's vampire stories are only the first dipping of O'Shaughnessy's literary toe in the water of an ambitious long-term publishing project, a series of 24 or 25 books about vampires. |
